Dr. Nikolaos (Nikos) Magouliotis ist Architekturhistoriker und Postdoktorand am Lehrstuhl von Prof. Dr. Maarten Delbeke, im Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur (gta) der ETH Zürich. Nikos promovierte 2022 an der ETH; zuvor studierte er Architektur und Architekturgeschichte in Athen (NTUA) und Oslo (AHO).
Seine Forschungs- und Lehrtätigkeit konzentriert sich auf die Geschichte und Geschichtsschreibung der Architektur im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert und im weiteren Sinne in der frühen Moderne, mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf folgenden Themen: volkstümliche Architektur, sowohl als theoretisches Konstrukt als auch als historische Realität; Überschneidungen zwischen Architektur und Volkskultur/Folklore; Prozesse der interkulturellen Begegnung und des Austauschs; die Verbreitung und Volkstümlichkeit des architektonischen Ornaments; die Erfindung und Verhandlung nationaler, kultureller und sozialer Identitäten durch Architektur.
Nikos' aktuelle Forschung - im Rahmen des vom SNF finanzierten Projekts "Building Identity: Character in Architectural Debate and Design, 1750-1850", das von Sigrid de Jong und Maarten Delbeke geleitet wird - konzentriert sich Nikos auf die Schweizer Volksarchitektur. Die Forschung stellt die Art und Weise, in der städtische Intellektuelle das Chalet als Symbol der Rustikalität und der nationalen Identität idealisierten, dem tatsächlichen Leben, den Bräuchen und dem Glauben der Bauern, die solche Bauten bauten und bewohnten, gegenüber.
Seine Dissertation (verteidigt im Jahr 2022) trug den Titel Forlorn Folklore: Discovering and debating the vernacular architecture of Greece, from the Ottoman era to the Greek nation-state und war Teil des HERA-Forschungsprogramms “Printing the Past. Architecture, Print Culture, and Uses of the Past in Modern Europe (PriArc)”. Die Dissertation befasste sich mit der volkstümlichen Architektur im Griechenland der osmanischen Zeit und den unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen, die ihr von westlichen Reisenden und lokalen Autoren zugeschrieben wurden.
Nikos hat seine Arbeit auf zahlreichen internationalen Konferenzen und Kolloquien vorgestellt. Er hat Artikel und Abhandlungen in Zeitschriften wie San Rocco, ARCH+ und Cartha sowie in akademischen Fachzeitschriften wie Architectural Histories, Future Anterior, The Journal of Architecture und Architecture Beyond Europe veröffentlicht.
