Curriculum vitae

Nikolaos (Nikos) Magouliotis is currently a PhD candidate in the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) at the Chair of Prof. Maarten Delbeke, in collaboration with the research program "PriArc: Printing the Past. Architecture, Print Culture and Uses of the Past in Modern Europe".

Nikos studied architecture and the history and theory of architecture in Athens (NTUA) and Oslo (AHO) and has worked as a teaching assistant at the Athens School of Architecture and as a field expert for academic groups visiting Athens. His previous thesis research (for the "Design-Space-Culture" MSc program in the NTUAthens School of Architecture) focussed on the dissemination of concrete and the "polykatoikia" typology in the Greek countryside after World War II and the post-traditional vernacular architectures that resulted from this process.

His research interests lie within the history, historiography and theory of architecture fromthe mid-18th to the 20th centuries, with particular focuson the notions of the 'primitive', the 'vernacular', the 'anonymous' and the 'ordinary' as theoretical and historical constructs, as well as the intersection of architectural theory and practice with nation-building, archaeology, ethnography and folklore.

Nikos‘ dissertation focused on the historiography of the Vernacular architecture of Greece, from the mid-18th to the early 20th centuries, as it manifests itself in the field of architectural theory and practice, but also intertwined with similar advances within archaeology and ethnography.

His writings have appeared in Cartha, San Rocco, ARCH+, Architectural Histories, The Journal of Architecture, Future Anterior, Architecture Beyond Europe, et al.
