By examining a selection of publications from different fields (archaeology, travel literature, ethnography, architectural theory, et al.) and along a broad time-span (mid-18th to early-20th century), this dissertation aims to understand the ideological debates and disciplinary shifts that lead to the discovery of the Byzantine and vernacular architecture of Greece; their rise from marginality to prominence; their legitimisation as scientific objects and as elements of national heritage; and the different ideas and theories projected on them during this long process.
